Multi-tasking Is A Dirty Word
Quickie today. Mostly because it’s an odd week for me, lots to do, and I have not prepped anything truly deep and meaningful after the attorney entries. I should be back to normal by Monday after turkey and family and a weekend of recovery from such, even though my family is relatively normal and we all get along. Still need recovery.
We currently have many balls up in the air. I have a friend who is a multitasking champion, proclaims it loudly, it’s her badge of honor. It struck me, as I was attempting to multitask way too much last week and ending up with pieces of my work and life all over the place, that regardless of whether I multitask or not, I still finish all of my current projects at the same time. If I don’t multitask, I finish them sequentially, one by one, and at some point they are all completed. If I do multitask, I finish them more or less all at once, probably at about the same time that I would have finished them had I performed them sequentially.
A lot of you are thinking “gwad! Hasn’t she learned that yet?” Ya, but I keep forgetting it! I think it is finally drummed into my head, though.
Already, I have noticed that my day is much calmer not having to keep track of many things, and I am actually making measurable progress! My stress level has definitely decreased. I put the task list on my whiteboard and now it is just a matter of knocking off each task down the list, crossing it off as I go. And rewarding myself with a big piece of chocolate cake each time I complete a task! (Currently, the tasks are large organizational ones with many subtasks that take many days to accomplish, so I can afford the chocolate cake incentive for now).
I hope everyone has a relaxing and peaceful holiday. We are small business owners–we have enough commotion in our lives.
